Activating a Maker Mindset

What is Maker Education?
Making is a stance toward learning - so says Sylvia Libow Martinez in this DML Central article and interview with Howard Rheingold. You can also examine why making is essential to learning from this Edutopia article.
"Messing, tinkering, building projects that actually interest learners is about developing skills of autonomous learning, cultivating an appreciation for and fluency in using learning communities and experienced guides, and practice at thinking big."
Howard Rheingold

Students can and should be scientists, artists, engineers and writers today.
The affordable and accessible technology of the Maker Movement makes learning by doing a realistic approach for schools.

So what are valid forms of 'maker education'?
How can a site like Instructables support making in the classroom? What about Mozilla Hive? Maker Festival? or Coding in the classroom? or 3D printing?

More VR videos are found on the Digital Bodies site.

Since today is #GlobalMakerDay, lets get into a 'making mentality' and create with purpose.

Play to learn with lego, postcard colouring, Flipgrid video response, laser cut stickers and green screen. As you play, think about how this 'making' model could work in your classroom.
Watch and learn from makers who will share on the #GlobalMakerDay live stream.

Making in Flipgrid

Connect to Flipgrid

Part of today's media making environment includes open and accessible video response systems such as Flipgrid. The option for ONE free grid to share student responses can be a powerful teaching/learning tool where media and digital literacies can become integrated into the access, use and create sequence.

Post a response if you'd like. This grid will CLOSE and become password protected after today's class.
