4.2 Tools of the Trade: Taking it to the Classroom
Readings
Deconstructing a story is a way to discover how a story has been crafted. Using a storyboard to map out the media, stylistics and sequence of a video production can enhance awareness of story telling techniques. Examining "The Power of Story" written and produced by Bernajean Porter is one possible activity. |
Digital storytelling "no matter in what form and created in whatever media is a powerful tool to transmit knowledge, culture, perspective and points of view."
Rosenthal Tolisano p. 7 |

Remix, Mashup and Repurpose
Take one thing (image, sound, video, text) and create something new. Through re-using, revising, repurposing and reenergizing, storytelling is created in new ways. Remix and mashups have been the topic of some debate.
In his article Dr. Mashup: or, Why educators should learn to stop worrying and love the remix, Brian Lamb captures the essence of what remix and mashup can do for open, transparent and discoverable educational resources. For digital storytelling, it is a way to incorporate elements that feel familiar yet unusual.
Let's try our own version of a remixed mashup of ideas as a way to create a new and creatively unique story.
Example: 1. Sherlock Holmes, 2. Matrix - walking the walls, 3. Bugs Bunny, 4. Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline, 5. Salmon with maple syrup, 6. Beach - sandy, warm, gritty; playful. Putting these items together would have Sherlock Holmes, with matrix style sunglasses and long coat, running down the beach to the tune of Sweet Caroline. He stops at the barbeque pit where Bugs Bunny will hand him some salmon with paprika to snack on as he flips and rolls, matrix style, in the sand. Then off he runs into the setting sun.

- Name your favourite movie. Describe ONE memorable scene from the movie.
- Name your favourite animated cartoon show. Select ONE character from that show.
- Name your favourite song. Select ONE band member or singer for that song.
- Name your favourite food. Select the main ingredient in that food. Name a spice that goes well with that food.

Example: 1. Sherlock Holmes, 2. Matrix - walking the walls, 3. Bugs Bunny, 4. Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline, 5. Salmon with maple syrup, 6. Beach - sandy, warm, gritty; playful. Remix and mashup each of these story elements to create a group story.
