Winter 2.1 Participatory Culture
This week we will focus on participatory cultures and how teachers can engage students in a participatory culture in the classroom. The changing roles of teachers and students within educational spaces need to be explored further. New terms and concepts will need to be defined. New actions will be introduced.

Re-Activating your Understanding

Henry Jenkins explores the transition from old to new media systems in this video where he talks about:
What does this mean for our students in our classrooms in our contexts (or other contexts around the globe)? |
Further to this, Jenkins, Purushotma, Weigel & Clinton (2009), in their book Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century, outline the features of a participatory culture. As you review these elements, think about the classroom you worked in during your first placement experience. How were these evident in the classroom setting?
We've already had a closer look at this Connected Learning infographic.
How do you make connected learning visible?
How do you document participatory, collaborative learning? Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has explored Documenting Learning and Media & Visual Literacy as well as Digital Citizenship and Documenting Learning. We'll take a closer look at these questions, insights and issues as they apply to teaching and learning with digital technologies. |
NEW MEDIA and Participatory Culture in the Classroom

The Seven Great Debates
Participatory culture in debate - have your say
Review the debate items from the article by Renee Hobbs titled The Seven Great Debates in the Media Literacy Movement.
Look at each issue from both sides. Think about your response to each of the issues in the debate! From your perspective as a soon-to-be teacher in a media rich world, with your knowledge of the characteristics found in today's students, and with a critical analysis of the issues, make a decision and VOTE. WRITE ABOUT IT!
|
Write About!
Visual ideas can help students begin writing. Take a moment to 'write about' something - link to this Write About collection of images and writing prompts. View the collection for grade and topic ideas. Select ONE image and take a moment to write a 6 sentence story. Share your story with someone in the class. Think about posting your story on your blog and hyperlink or embed the image. |
It's about Design Thinking!
|
Consider These ResourcesTeaching is becoming a creative act of designing with media and digital resources, tools and literacies! Michael Fullan refers to new roles for teachers in New Pedagogies for Deeper Learning. Part of this 'new media' practice and design thinking comes with feelings of discomfort and uncertainty. As you begin to dig deeper into digital storytelling as a means to learning about media and digital literacies, remember that this experience will help you model being open, uncomfortable and uncertain.
